MHFA™ India Making Your Campus Mental Health Friendly
Campus life brings with it newfound independence and increased responsibilities for young adults, which can often be challenging. Being away from their support systems, students may struggle to cope with the stressors and emotional issues they face, leading to mental health problems.
In India, the alarming statistic that more than one student dies of suicide every hour highlights the severity of the mental health crisis among students. Additionally, substance misuse, including alcohol and illicit drugs, is on the rise among young people.
As an educational institution, you have a crucial role to play in promoting and ensuring positive mental well-being among students, thereby creating mentally healthy campuses.
One important step is to provide accessible counseling and therapy services on campus. These services can serve as the initial point of contact for students in need of support. However, research indicates that help-seeking behavior among students is poor, highlighting the need for proactive measures to encourage and facilitate access to care.
What stops students from seeking help?
- Stigma, lack of knowledge, and negative beliefs about mental health
- Low mental health literacy with no capacity to recognise the symptoms of mental health issues
- Lack of trust in peers and the system in maintaining a level of confidentiality
- Help negation that leads to isolation.
MHFA™ trains students and faculty members with quality mental health knowledge and practical skills, to mitigate students’ mental health risks and facilitate all-round student achievement. Trained Mental Health Firstaiders become a first-response peer-to-peer support system, well-equipped to:
