The Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985

An Act to consolidate and amend the law relating to narcotic drugs, to make stringent provisions for the control and regulation of operations relating to narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances 1, to provide for the forfeiture of property derived from, or used in, illicit traffic in narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, to implement the provisions of the International Conventions on Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances and for matters connected therewith.

The Indian Lunacy Act, 1912

It laid down measures to improve the care and situation of mentally ill persons. One of the important measures was the appointment of psychiatrists as full-time officers in Mental Health hospitals that would no longer be under the supervision of the Inspector General of Prisons. It also laid down increased legal safeguards against wrongful detention and rigorous criteria for certification of the mentally ill.

The Mental Health Act, 1987

An Act to consolidate and amend the law relating to the treatment and care of mentally ill persons, to make better provision with respect to their property and affairs and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.

With the ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of People with Disability (UNCRPD) in October 2007, the 1987 Act was found not enough to protect the rights and promote care of mentally ill persons. India still needed robust institutional and statutory frameworks in mental healthcare and rights-based legislation for community care and least restrictive treatment.

The Cable Television Networks (Regulation) Act, 1995

An Act to regulate the operation of cable television networks in the country and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.

This Act completely prohibits advertisements that promote cigarettes and alcohol consumption.

The Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products (Prohibition of Advertisement and Regulation of Trade and Commerce, Production, Supply and Distribution) Act, 2003

An Act to prohibit the advertisement of, and to provide for the regulation of trade and commerce in, and production, supply and distribution of, cigarettes and other tobacco products and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.

National Mental Health Policy, 2014

The vision of the National Mental Health Policy is to promote mental health, prevent mental illness, enable recovery from mental illness, promote de- stigmatisation and desegregation, and ensure socio-economic inclusion of persons affected by mental illness by providing accessible, affordable and quality health and social care to all persons through their life-span, within a rights-based framework.

The Mental Healthcare Act, 2017

An Act to provide for mental healthcare and services for persons with mental illness and to protect, promote and fulfil the rights of such persons during delivery of mental healthcare and services and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.

The National Commission for Allied and Healthcare Professions Act, 2021

An Act to provide for regulation and maintenance of standards of education and services by allied and healthcare professionals, assessment of institutions, maintenance of a Central Register and State Register and creation of a system to improve access, research and development and adoption of latest scientific advancement and for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.
